Process:

Inquiry:

When I first started reading the instructions I struggled to come up with what I wanted this project to be. I knew I wanted the background image to be a picture of a face with a white background. I also knew I wanted a nature image to go on top of the face. I wanted no part of the face to remain except for the face shape. I felt it should be like this to add mystery to the person. Who is this person? Why is the face hidden? What was the reason for the image? What is she looking at?

Technical process
I took a picture of my mom and had to look to the side at an angle. After that I went outside after my dad had just watered the plants and found that I was most drawn in by the Japanese Maple tree. Because of this I took pictures of the leaves with drops of water on them. I edited the picture of the tree and brought the red in the leaves out by increasing the saturation and vibrance. I then put the image of my mom in photoshop and using the brush tool I got rid of everything except for my moms face in the background and then I combined the two images using the layer and the mask tool.

Critiques:

Two peer and one teacher constructive and specific criticisms in the following areas sensory (elements of art), formal/technical (organization/principles of design and use of materials/techniques) and expressive qualities (how does it connect to conceptual process).

  • SENSORY - Ava suggested to make the texure not as strong because it looks off

  • FORMAL/TECHNICAL - Kora suggested to make the gap in between smoother

  • EXPRESSIVE - Ms. Johnson suggested to look up the meaning of the Japanese Maple Tree

Final:

Elements and Principles of Design:
  •  Art Elements- I used Space in my project to add emphasis on the subjects which are the two heads that are facing each other. Without it the space it would be hard to tell what the focal point of the piece is
  • Principal of Design- I used Emphasis in a way similar to space. Because the background is white and the focal point is red the viewer is not going to look at the white empty space but the red faces.

Reflection: (max 100 characters including spaces)

Idea: The idea for the project was to have an image that is covered by another that represents more and has a deeper meaning

Dimensions: 8.5in x 11 in

Material: I used photo paper to print because I did the editing online for my piece.

Process: After I had taken the pictures that I needed, I got rid of the background, overlapped the two, then created a mirror version on Photoshop
